Join us for a Safari Night where you can experience Auckland Zoo after the sun goes down.

Your Safari Night evening includes a barbecue dinner followed by a journey around the Zoo by torchlight - as well as the option to stay overnight.

  2. Minimum age: 8 years. All children must be accompanied by an adult.
  3. Price: $50 per person (BBQ walk), $80 per person (full sleepover + BBQ walk).

We also offer education groups and community youth groups (minimum 20 people, maximum 50 people) the option to stay overnight for a discounted rate ($65 per person as opposed to $80).

Yes, children can attend. They must be at least 8 years old and accompanied by an adult.

The minimum number of people for a group Safari Night is 20.

For groups smaller than 20 people, you will need to book into a Public Safari Night - run during the school holidays.​

The barbecue dinner consists of sausages, bread, potato salad, coleslaw and cordial. We also provide a vegetarian option (if required).

If you're staying the night, supper is hot chocolate and biscuits, breakfast is toast, cornflakes and Weetbix.

No, all Safari Nights are strictly non-alcoholic.

If you want a function, which includes alcohol and Safari Night walk, you will need to book a private function through the functions department (phone 0800 54 98 98 or email to discuss this option).

If you have booked in for the night's stay, you will be sleeping in The Old Elephant House. It is a communal sleeping area shared by the entire group.​​​​

Unfortunately there are no showers available for the safari night, only toilet facilities.

  1. Things to bring (night's stay): Comfortable clothing, covered walking footwear, raincoat, sleeping bag or other warm bedding (a sleeping mat is provided), sleep sheet and pillow, pyjamas, a torch with red cellophane covering the light and toiletries.

Yes, please bring your torch for the night walk. All torches must be covered in red cellophane.

We will supply you with a sleeping mat. You need to bring your own sleeping bag, blanket, sheet and pillow.

If the weather is excessively bad, we may cancel or postpone your safari night. If there is only light rain or wind, your safari night will go ahead.

Your night walk includes lizards, cheetah, lions, tigers and our elephants. Please note that most of our animals have the choice to be outside in their enclosures or inside under cover so we cannot guarantee sightings of all animals.​

The Zoo is located next to Western Springs Park so this is a great place to explore. MOTAT is also just down the road and is a popular venue for groups that attend Safari Nights.​
